Mesa Card Abruptly Shuts Down
The Mesa Homeowners card was one of my new favorite cards since first getting approved back in May. Not only did I earn 3x points on almost everything home related as well as daycare, but I also earned points on my mortgage when I spent at least $1,000 on the card each month. In my short amount of time with the card, I earned over 182,000 points!!! Unfortunately, they shut down on Friday December 12th and I was force to redeem my 126,586 points for the worst ever redemption of my life… a $759 statement credit.
Goodbye, Mesa
It came quite as a shock to me when I received an email late Friday night telling me that they had closed my card and I would no longer be able to earn Mesa points. To be honest, I thought it was something that I did. Maybe they didn’t like me earning so many points and only using the card at places I earned 3x points. Well, that probably wasn’t far from the truth when I learned that they sent out the same email to each and every one of their cardholders.
Mesa Shutdown Email
Why This Came as a Surprise to Me But Shouldn’t Have
Mesa had been on a tear and had been adding new transfer partners all summer as well as Omni Hotels and Resorts just 10 days before they shut down. They also just added a free Instacart+ membership for everyone. Additionally, I had just completed a targeted bonus where I was to earn 50,000 points after spending $10,000 in three months. Maybe I was too naive or was just too excited by how lucrative this card had been.
In hindsight, this card was too good to be true. I was earning 3x points on all things home related as well as daycare. Cardholders also received a ton of benefits with this no annual fee card. I got a $100 Cozy Earth gift card, a $30 statement credit each quarter at Lowe’s, a free Instacart+ membership, a free Costco membership amongst other things.
I’m sure they just couldn’t continue to fund these amazing benefits and lucrative points earning structure.
What Happens to All Your Points?
After the shut down email came, I should have transferred all my points out immediately. I knew better but was thinking I could somehow get back in before I realized they shut down everyone. The following morning they updated their app to not allow airline transfers but some people found a loophole to get the screen to show. Mine never worked with said loophole, but I was able to use my 126,586 points as a statement credit worth a measly $759.52. If I had been able to transfer all of those points to a partner like Air Canada, I could have used those for a roundtrip business class flight to Europe worth wayyyyy more than $759.
I still have another 56,535 points pending but am not holding my breath they will ever post nor will I be able to use them.
